What Is the Milwaukee County Zoo Giraffe Feeding?

The Zoo offers a special up-close encounter where visitors can stand on the elevated Giraffe Deck, come eye-to-eye with the tallest animals at the zoo, and hand-feed them leafy greens.

It’s one of the most affordable and accessible animal experiences in Milwaukee — and perfect for kids, families, or anyone who wants an unforgettable moment at the Zoo.

When Is Giraffe Feeding Offered?

Giraffe feedings are typically available daily during the summer season.

Typical seasonal schedule:

  • Offered daily: 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
  • No public feedings: 1:00–2:00 p.m.
  • Season: Usually Memorial Day through early September

📌 Since dates and hours can change each year, check the ticket booth near the Giraffe Deck for the latest schedule.

Cost

Feeding the giraffes requires a separate ticket:

  • $5 per person
  • Each ticket includes three pieces of lettuce
  • No Zoo Pass discount at this time

You’ll buy the feeding tickets at the booth located at the base of the Giraffe Deck.

What to Expect During the Experience

When we visited on a sunny weekday morning, there were about 10–15 people ahead of us. The line moved smoothly, and watching other visitors feed the giraffes actually made the anticipation more fun.

Each participant gets three big lettuce leaves. The giraffes stretch out their long, dark-purple tongues and gently pull the lettuce from your hand. It’s quick, exciting, and surprisingly calm — perfect for kids who might feel nervous.

During our visit, a loud bird momentarily distracted the giraffes and they wandered away, which gave us time to enjoy the elevated view of the exhibit and appreciate the size and beauty of the animals from above.

Feedings may pause briefly based on:

  • Weather
  • Special events
  • The giraffes’ appetites (they take breaks!)

Staff will always give the most up-to-date info at the booth.

Where to Find the Giraffe Deck

The Giraffe Deck is located next to the giraffe habitat inside the zoo. Look for the large elevated boardwalk with great views into the savanna habitat.
