Day Trip to Madison with Kids: Best Family-Friendly Stops & Outdoor Activities (2026)

Crowds of people sitting at colorful outdoor tables on the Memorial Union Terrace in Madison, Wisconsin, with green ivy-covered buildings and trees in the background. Text overlay reads “Day Trip to Madison (With Kids!).

Is there anything better than a day in Madison?

A few weeks ago, I spent a summer day there with my daughters (ages 9 and 11), and it reminded me just how much the city has to offer families. Even after living in Madison for six years as a college student and visiting many times since, we still found new things to explore together.

Madison makes a perfect day trip from Milwaukee, Waukesha, Chicago, or even nearby communities like Sun Prairie and Middleton, thanks to its walkable downtown and easy access to kid-friendly outdoor spots.

Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning with fresh eyes, Madison makes a quick and easy day trip from Milwaukee. In every season, you’ll find family-friendly activities, delicious food, and plenty of opportunities to be outside. Here’s how we spent our day – plus lots of reader tips to help you plan your own adventure.

Outdoor Kid Activities in Madison (Year-Round Favorites)

If you’re looking for simple outdoor fun in Madison, here are a few family-friendly ideas to add to your day:

  • Walk the UW Lakeshore Path along Lake Mendota
  • Enjoy lake views and live music at the Memorial Union Terrace
  • Picnic or play on the Capitol lawn
  • Explore the playground and animals at the free Henry Vilas Zoo
  • Wander the Olbrich Botanical Gardens outdoor grounds (free)

For weekend-specific events, the Dane County Farmers’ MarketTerrace concerts, and neighborhood festivals are always a good bet.

Start at the Dane County Farmers’ Market

Families relaxing on the grassy lawn outside the Wisconsin State Capitol on a sunny day, with the dome and tall white columns of the Capitol building in view behind large shade trees.

We began our day at the Dane County Farmers’ Market, a phantasmagoria of fresh produce, colorful bouquets, handmade soaps, local honey, and so much more.

This iconic Saturday morning experience circles the Wisconsin State Capitol in one big counterclockwise loop. It’s the largest producers-only farmers’ market in the country, which means everything is grown or made by the person selling it. You’ll find:

  • Fresh, local produce
  • Colorful flower bouquets
  • Handmade soaps and lotions
  • Wisconsin cheeses and meats
  • Local honey, jams, and baked goods

Don’t Miss:
The famous hot & spicy cheese bread from Stella’s Bakery. It’s a must. Bring a little cash and don’t be surprised if there’s a line — it moves quickly.

Explore the Wisconsin State Capitol

Visitors exploring the grand rotunda inside the Wisconsin State Capitol, with marble floors, staircases, and a circular balcony overlooking the main hall.

The Farmers’ Market wraps around the Wisconsin State Capitol, and we couldn’t resist heading inside.

The Capitol is open to the public and totally free. It’s the largest in the country by square footage, and full of hidden surprises. Here’s what we did:

  • Climbed grand staircases
  • Snapped photos outside the Wisconsin Supreme Court
  • Looked at historic artifacts and photos
  • Talked about how government works
  • Rode the elevator to the 6th floor Observation Deck for a 360° view of Madison’s isthmus

You’ll see Lakes Mendota and Monona from above — it’s a beautiful way to show kids how unique Madison’s geography really is.

💡 Reader Tip: “Don’t forget to go outside at the Capitol too! I love climbing the spiral staircase to the lower roof as a kid.” (jzmclane)

Pack a Blanket and Picnic on the Capitol Lawn

With fresh goodies from the market, we laid out a blanket and had an impromptu picnic on the Capitol lawn. Live music played in the background. People lounged in the grass. Kids played nearby. It was one of those simple, perfect summer moments.

Wander Campus & Visit the Union Terrace

A young girl stands in front of the Abraham Lincoln statue at Bascom Hill on the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus, with Bascom Hall and a large Bucky Badger banner in the background.

After lunch, we walked down State Street and made our way through the UW-Madison campus. We:

  • Ran up and down Bascom Hill (a rite of passage)
  • Walked along the Lakeshore Path
  • Ended at the Memorial Union Terrace, right on Lake Mendota

There happened to be a jazz festival going on, but even without live music, the Terrace is a magical place to relax with kids. You can grab lunch and watch the sailboats drift by.

💡 Reader Tip: “Henry Vilas Zoo is free and the terrace is always a good view.” (ap_badger)
