Quick Guide: Wehr Nature Center for kids

I’ve been wanting to visit Wehr Nature Center for a long time and finally got the chance on a beautiful spring day a few weeks ago. It’s located in Whitnall Park in Franklin around the shores of glittering Mallard Lake.

Parking: There is ample parking in their parking lot near the nature center.

Cost: There is no admission fee, but you pay a small parking fee in the nature center.

Nature Center: You’ll find a large fish tank (the staff let my kids feed them!), nature games and puzzles, hands-on sensory tables, and a gift shop. It was a nice place for the kids to play before and after our hike.

Nature Play Space: Spend some time in the Nature Play Space right behind the nature center. The area is made of natural materials for kids to explore, such as tree trunk stepping stones, hollow logs to crawl through, and a little log cabin to explore. It overlooks Mallard Lake:

Nature hikes: After the kids played for awhile, we were off on our hike. My daughters are 2 and 4, so “hiking” consists of walking ten feet, having to use the bathroom, walking another ten feet, getting tired, repeat.

For this reason, the Family Friendly Trail was perfect for us. It’s a half mile long along a wood chip path, with plenty of benches and places to rest.

We saw lots of wildlife, beautiful views of the lake, and got some good exercise.

For older kids, there is a 1.5 mile hike called the Lake Loop, and it will take you past a beautiful waterfall into the Root River.
