The Milwaukee County Zoo's resident sweetheart orangutan, Alex, is looking for loving sponsors this Valentine's Day.
Born right here in Wisconsin at Henry Vilas Zoo, Alex has lived all over the country including the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden and the Fresno Chaffee Zoo. The Milwaukee County Zoo has been Alex's home sweet home for two years now.
She's mellow, she's sweet, and visitors have fallen in love with her big eyes and gentle demeanor.
In summer, she enjoys climbing around her outdoor enclosure and can often be seen climbing upside-down or backwards. She likes leafy greens, carrots, pineapple, and juice.
Orangutans are the largest arboreal (living in trees) animals in the world and need large areas of habitat to survive. However, their habitat is undergoing deforestation for farmland, palm oil plantations, and urban development.
The greatest threat to orangutans is the conversion of habitat to palm oil plantations, as the plantations are quickly expanding to meet demands for palm oil for food, cosmetics, and toiletries.
As a Valentine's Day present for the animal lover in your life, you can sponsor Alex for $50. Your sponsorship includes:
· An 8-inch, plush-toy orangutan
· A certificate of sponsorship
· A colorful fact sheet about orangutans
· An invitation to a behind-the-scenes event for animal sponsors held in August
· Sponsor recognition on the Zoo's "All in the Family" donor board for a year
· An animal sponsor decal
· A chocolate heart
Your order must be received by Feb. 5 to arrive in time for Valentine's Day. Shipping and handling is included. You can learn more here.
