June Community Service Projects: A Kaleidoscope of Opportunities for the Whole Family (2021)

Milwaukee With Kids is continuing our partnership with Kids Impact Community (KIC) to connect you with simple, powerful family service opportunities throughout the year. Previously, the opportunities have centered around an overall monthly theme, but this summer KIC will be offering a “kaleidoscope” of different opportunities.

From feeding the hungry to cleaning up the environment, there’s a service project for everyone. Here are some projects happening in June:


Gardening for Good Hoop House Helpers 2021

June 16, 5 a.m. – 7 p.m.

In-person event for all ages

Maglio Tomato Building, 4287 N Port Washington Road, Milwaukee, WI 53212

Price: Free

Description: Kids will have fun getting their hands dirty in the big “hoop houses” at Maglio Urban Farm. Tasks include planting, harvesting, weeding, moving soil, and generally maintaining the garden beds that yield fresh produce for the Riverwest Food Pantry.

Putting Trash to Work – Sleeping Mats for the Homeless

June 1 – June 30

At-home project for all ages

Price: Free

Description: Keep plastic bags out of the landfill and turn them into sleeping mats for the homeless! The mats are crocheted by Mercy Mats of West Allis and distributed by Repairers of the Breach. All you and your family need to do is turn your plastic bags into “plarn” – balls of plastic yarn to be used to make the mats. It’s an easy process that the whole family can do together!

Art Kits for Caring Kids

June 5 – 20

At-home event for all ages

Price: Free

Description: Kids create artwork to brighten the living spaces of residents in skilled nursing and assisted living facilities. KIC supplies an art kit that includes materials for three projects, and participants are encouraged to use their own creativity and art supplies to add any of their own special touches. June projects include a paper plate stars-and-stripes wreath, a painted fireworks craft, and a finger-painted American flag.

Social Justice Story Time: Celebrating Juneteenth Day

June 15, 4 – 5 p.m.

At-home event for all ages

Price: Free

Description: Celebrate Juneteenth Day by attending a live, virtual story time hosted by Rona Kader Wolfe, a kindergarten teacher and anti-bias educator for 28 years. Wolfe will read three stories via Zoom, then lead a movement break followed by a thoughtful, kid-friendly discussion. If you can’t make it to the live event, don’t worry! A recording will be sent to all registrants.

Panera End of Day Dough-Nation Delivery

June – August (3-month commitment required)

In-person event for all ages

Panera Bread, 5595 N Port Washington Rd, Glendale, WI 53217

Price: Free

Description: Participating families pick a Sunday or Monday (e.g., 1st Mondays of the month, 3rd Sundays of the month) to pick up baked goods from Panera in Glendale (any time before 10:00 a.m.) and deliver them to The Gathering’s Executive Director’s home in Sherman Park neighborhood (Sundays) or to a Shorewood home drop-off location (Mondays). The baked goods then get distributed to community members living with food insecurity.
