Maple sugaring events for kids and families 2018

Can you feel it in the air? It’s maple sugarin’ season!In late February and March, the earliest signs of spring begin to show, and the maple trees are ready to be tapped.It’s also when local nature centers gear up for their annual maple sugaring events, enabling kids and families to learn about the process in a hands-on, interactive way.

It’s the perfect time to explore nature with your kids, and learn together about how we turn nature into products that we love.

Tapping the Sugar Bush

Help prepare for the sugarin’ season by tapping the maple trees in Riveredge’s sugar bush. They need your help to drill the holes, tap in the spiles and hang the buckets.

From Sap to Syrup! Maple Sugaring (Washington Park)

Saturday, March 3rd and 17th

Take an in depth look into maple sap harvesting in Riverside Park and how maple syrup is made. This program will be both indoors and out. After learning about the process, you’ll get to enjoy pancakes with homemade maple syrup. Registration required.

Maple Sugar Time

Here comes the melting snow, muddy shoes, and MAPLE SUGAR! Bring your big boots and sweet tooth, and we’ll do the rest. Begin inside with a story of how maple sugaring may have been discovered. Then travel outside through the stages of making maple syrup, from tapping trees to boiling sap with the sugar farmer at the evaporator. Top the morning off with REAL maple sugar over silver dollar-sized pancakes. This event is wheelchair accessible. Registration is required. To register call 414-352-2880 x0.

Maple Sugarin’ Festival

Riveredge has over 40 years of experience maple sugaring, and they tap around 400 trees a year. Their Maple Sugarin’ Festival will take you on a journey through the sugarbush where you’ll learn how to tap a maple tree, observe live demonstrations, participate in hands-on activities, enjoy music, games, and more. When you reach the evaporator, you’ll see how sap is transformed into syrup and enjoy pancakes with 100% pure Riveredge maple syrup. Lunch & refreshments will be available for purchase.

This year’s festival activities include a live blacksmith branding demonstration, syrup tasting, historical legends and experiences, indoor crafts and games, make your own pancake mix, tree tapping treks, music and more!

Spring brings increased activity in the RHS sugar shack where the sap from maple trees is processed into syrup. Syrup demonstrations begin at 11:15 am, 12:15 & 1:15 pm and you will learn the history of maple sap products beginning in 100 AD.

You are invited to inspect the sugar shack and ask questions about the syrup production.You can visit the park’s historical buildings and learn about the on-going renovation projects:

Learn how tools were made at the Blacksmith Shop

Listen to a story during Story Time in Log Cabin: 11:45, 12:45 & 1:45.

Tour the log barn & cabin (buildings open weather dependent).

Tours are available in the Messer/Mayer Mill and the Millers Home.

Cost for Mill & House tours: $5.00, under 6 free.

Bring your appetite. Visit the concession stand for hot dogs cooked in maple sap along with beverages and sweets. Our Maple Cotton Candy will be a tasty delight!

Maple Sugar Days (Wehr Nature Center)

Saturday & Sunday, March 24 & 25, 2018

1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Celebrate the spring thaw and our Wisconsin heritage at Maple Sugar Days March. The program includes a short walk to the sugarbush, a visit to an old-time sugarin’ camp,a boil down demonstration and handson activities for children. A pancake with real maple syrup will top off your day. The guided hikes begin at 1 pm and continue every 15 minutes until 4 pm. Maple sugar treats and tapping equipment will be available for purchase.

$6 per person, payable at the door. Children ages 2 & under – FREE

$3.50 Regular parking fee in effect.
