Here are some free events for kids and families around Milwaukee this month!

1. Groundhog Day event at the Zoo

Friday, February 2nd, 2018 at 10:30 a.m.

The public is invited to visit the Zoo at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 2 and gather near the outdoor Polar Bear Exhibit where Lilly will be summoned, with her favorite treats of fish and peanut butter to make her first weather prognostication. That’s right! A polar bear is making the prediction this year.

3. Free Kids Movies at Marcus Theaters

Enjoy the Kids Dream Winter Film Series presented by American Family Insurance. Between January 26 and March 18, moviegoers can see family-favorite films on the big screen on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 10 a.m. Admission for all showtimes is just $3. Attendees can also enjoy concessions specials, including popcorn and fountain drinks for just $2.75 each.

4. Urban Candlelight Hike

Join other hardy northerners as they cure their cabin fever and bundle up for a winter adventure at the Urban Candlelight Hike! Hiking or snowshoeing on two miles of the candlelit Hank Aaron State Trail, roaring campfires and marshmallows, e-bike and fat tire bike demos, hot chocolate, and pastries await! Candlelight trails and campfires free to all. You can help support this event by purchasing a “Fun Pass” for extras, including a beer at the after party at Third Space Brewing! Fun Passes include one adult and all children 12 and under attending with adult.

5. Winter Wonderland at Hoyt Park

February 18th from 12:00-4:00

Friends of Hoyt Park & Pool invite you to embrace the winter season and its beauty at our annual Winter Wonderland event. It will include winter-themed activities for children in the historic Grand Hall, as well as a winter woods walk through the surrounding park and landscaped pool area led by staff member and horticulturalist Michael Kreuser.

The event is free, and no reservations are needed. Food items, including hot dogs, brats, pizza and beer garden pretzels, will be available for purchase from The Landing at Hoyt Park. Beverages for purchase include hot chocolate and several adult beverages on The Landing’s menu. We also will be roasting marshmallows for s’mores on the warm Grand Hall fire.

Learn about nature’s winter beauty, and enjoy the cozy atmosphere in front of the fireplace in the Grand Hall at Hoyt Park!

Little Explorers Morning Playgroup

Preschool is the age of discovery and we’re here to help your kids learn and explore! Join in on the 2nd Friday of the month for our preschool playgroup. There will be activities (including our secret slide) specifically designed to engage the senses of children ages 4 and under.

Free to all visitors on Thursday, February 1st from 10:00-8:00 for all visitors. Check out an art pack and explore the galleries, or visit the Kohl’s Art Generation Open Studio. The museum is always free for kids 12 and under!

10. Free admission to Betty Brinn Children’s Museum

Free to all visitors on Thursday, February 15th from 5:00-8:00 p.m. for Neighborhood Night. Join in for free admission, enjoy access to all of the Museum’s hands-on exhibits, and stop by the Be A Maker space to find tools, materials and techniques for endless ways to experiment and create. The Museum will celebrate the Muskego Way, Amani and Metcalfe Park neighborhoods in October, November and December with special entertainment and resource booths hosted by community agencies and organizations.

12. Educational Seminar: Yoga for Kids

Friday, February 9th from 4:30-5:30 p.m.

What happens to the body when we dance and shake? Why do we OM? Is our breath really magic? What the heck is mindfulness all about, and why should we teach it to our children? In this hour-long FREE session, Children’s Director, Melissa King, will explain the science of yoga and why it’s so effective. Learn what is actually happening in the body and why experiencing this practice at such a young age is a vital resource for happy and healthy adolescence, as well as adulthood. There will be fun and mindful games and activities for children to do in one room while the adults get to learn and ask questions in our main studio space. We will also have complementary beverages for all to enjoy.
