What to do over winter break


Anyone going stir crazy yet? The extra snuggles over winter break are lovely. But after awhile, you might need to get out of the house and do something.

Here are some things going on this week for kids and families.

​​1. Kohl’s Art Generation Studio: Technicolor Holiday

Tuesday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.Thursday, 10 a.m.–7 p.m.

The Kohl’s Art Generation Studio is now open every day for families to make art together. During winter break (December 26–January 1), families can sculpt imaginative creatures out of clay, inspired by the exhibition ​"Jaime Hayon: Technicolor", that can also be hung to display. Leading up to New Year’s Eve, they can create technicolor masks using a wild assortment of colorful​ materials. Studio activities are free with Museum admission. Museum admission is free for kids 12 and under every day the Museum is open.

2. Milwaukee County Zoo Free admission week

The zoo is offering an entire week of FREE admission for ALL guests, from December 25th to January 1st. Bundle up and plan a family outing to visit some of our cold weather critters or stay warm in the Aviary or Big Cat Country. Parking ($12) and concession fees still apply.

3. Free Family Open Swims at Goldfish Swim School

Entertain the family and burn off some energy at a free family open swim. Enjoy the warm, colorful, tropical-themed environment. They'll have pool toys, life guards, life jackets for those who need them, and even have an instructor or two in the water ready to spend a few minutes working with the kids! No need to sign up - just come on in.

4. Riveredge Nature Center Winter Camp

Take all the fun of summer camp, add in Riveredge's 379-acre wild Wisconsin winter wonderland, and you’ve got a recipe for the coolest winter break EVER. Campers at the third annual Winter Camp will spend their days snowshoeing, hiking, crafting, exploring, sledding, playing games, storytelling around a campfire, and so much more around Riveredge's natural sanctuary. The highly trained and experienced teaching staff will lead small groups in the hands-on natural learning, exploring, and adventuring that Riveredge camps have become so well known for, and will closely monitor and plan activities both inside and outside as conditions merit. Winter Camp is the perfect recipe for beating the winter doldrums (and saving mom and dad’s sanity during winter break too!).Winter camp is for campers aged 6-12 and meets from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day (Wednesday, Dec 27th to Friday, Dec 29), with an optional overnight on Friday night.

5. Wisconsin Humane Society's Bow Wow Blizzard Camp

Milwaukee Campus and Ozaukee Campus

Come in from the cold and warm up with some fuzzy friends at the Wisconsin Humane Society's Bow Wow Blizzard Camp, a one-day winter camp for kids ages 8 to 12. There will be a variety of activities offered throughout the day including crafts, games, a behind-the-scenes tour, and even a chance to meet some animal guests. The fee for this camp is $55.00. Snacks and all materials will be provided.

6. Winter Break Fun at Betty Brinn Children’s Museum

Enjoy special workshops, performances, exhibits and an early New Year’s Eve party for families during Winter Break week. Activities includes:

Be A Maker Workshops and Maker Activities: Equipment Teardown (age 3 and older)

December 23 from 12-2 p.m.

Take apart a printer, computer or toys and discover what is inside, including motors, speakers, and circuit boards.

Paper Snowstorm

December 26-29 from 10 a.m.-noon and 2-4 p.m.

Make beautiful snowflake creations using measurement, counting and paper folding skills.

Learn to Solder (age 6 and older)

December 27 & 28 at 2-3 p.m. or 3-4 p.m.

Learn beginning soldering skills. Participants will receive all the materials and tools needed to create a project from start to finish. A workshop fee of $10 for members and $15 for non-members applies. Children must be accompanied by an adult and Museum admission is not included. Become a Paper Pilot

Visit the design station to build and launch a paper airplane creation and test it using a giant target commemorating 2018.

The Photo Factory

Get your selfie smile ready and walk through fun photo stations, where you are the star.

Performances:

Dance With Me presented by Danceworks, Inc.

December 26 & 27 from 9:30-10 a.m.

Adults can model healthy exercise habits and join their child in learning simple dance routines, featuring music and movement activities.

Kohl’s Wild Theater

December 29 from 11 a.m.-noon

Enjoy a conservation-themed theater performance using drama, songs and puppetry presented by Kohl’s Wild Theater. This performance is free with regular admission and limited space is available. Registration is required on the day of the performance at the Museum’s Information Desk.

An Early New Year’s Eve Party

December 29, with a ball drop at noon

Make a party hat and help construct a giant contraption, using found materials, machines and real tools, for the dance party and ball drop at noon.

The Adventures of MR. POTATO HEAD Exhibit

Join everyone’s favorite, silly character with changeable parts in The Adventures of MR. POTATO HEAD, a special interactive exhibit created by the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum in collaboration with PLAYSKOOL®. MR. POTATO HEAD will lead the way on a jungle safari, in outer space, and on an archaeological dig with amazingly fun ways to help children build fundamental skills, welcome new experiences with confidence, curiosity and humor, and to think about all they can be and do.

Museum Hours: Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday, noon-5 p.m.

Admission: $8 per person; $7 for seniors (ages 55+); children age 1 and younger are free

7. Operation New Year’s Eve Around the World

December 31st, 2017

11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

SafeHouse Milwaukee (779 N. Front St., Milwaukee)

Visit Website Operation NYE Around the World commences at 11:00 a.m. with junior spy and family-friendly festivities. Celebrate every hour as SafeHouse agents ring in 2018 across the globe. Complimentary sparkling wine and grape juice toasts will be served every hour between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. In addition, the SafeHouse will be offering drink specials on cocktails and drinks from around the globe.

8. Cool Fool Kite Festival (Free!)

Monday, January 1st in Veteran's Park

This Milwaukee tradition offers a fun way to celebrate New Year's Day with the family. Kites and hot food are available for purchase or bring your own. Free hot chocolate, coffee, and snacks will be served while it lasts, compliments of the Gift of Wings. A group of local Milwaukee Ice carvers, The Quiet Ice Carvers, will also be live carving!
