10 *free* events for kids in August

Dear readers,How is it August already? I’m already getting emails about back to school stuff.

I do love the lazy days of summer, and there’s nothing better than warm weather adventures.

But honestly, part of me is really excited to get back to a routine. The days can get kiiiiiinda long without a ton of structured activities.

If you’re feeling the same way, hopefully this list of free stuff to do in August will be extra helpful.

1. Free admission days

Don’t miss free admission at these Milwaukee area attractions this month!

Milwaukee Public Museum: Free admission for all on Saturday, August 12th at the Milwaukee Public Museum thanks to the Greater Milwaukee Foundation.The museum is also free on Thursday, August 3rd for all visitors. Open 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. (Residents of Milwaukee County receive a $2.00 discount on general admission everyday with proof of residency.)

Betty Brinn Children’s Museum: Free to all visitors on Thursday, August 17th from 5:00-8:00 p.m. for Neighborhood Night. Join in for FREE admission, enjoy access to all of the Museum’s hands-on exhibits, and stop by our Be A Maker space to find tools, materials and techniques for endless ways to experiment and create.

3. Milwaukee Dragon Festival

The Milwaukee Chinese Community Center presents this festival filled with food, music, dance, martial arts and Dragon Boat Races – vibrant colored boats filled with men and women, working as one, racing to cross the finish line first. Don’t miss this thrilling event!

4. Kidz Days at the Marcus Center

KidZ Days At the Center offers free programming for children throughout the summer on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. through August 15th. It is held outdoors on KidZ Stage. This community service provides live performing arts that incorporates an educational component and encourages interactive participation.

Presenters include First Stage,the Milwaukee Public Library, special guest performers such as TrueSkool Breakdancers, WI Conservatory of Music, and The Milwaukee Flyers Tumbling Team, and cultural presenters representing Native American, African, Asian, Hispanic, Indian and some European countries.

There are no tickets or reservations required to attend any of the KidZ Days At the Center programs. Seating is on a first come, first serve basis.

5. Live at Peck Sunday Band Concerts & AWE Trucks

Enjoy live music with your family on Sundays at 2:00 p.m. at the Peck Pavilion at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. Plus, the AWE Truck (Artists Working in Education) will be at most concerts leading hands on arts and crafts projects for kids! (The AWE Truck will not be there August 13th.)

6. Free admission specials at Irish Fest

Irish Fest is absolutely packed with fun for the kids this year with parades, a Family Passport, the leprechaun village, a children’s area, coloring contest, and so much more

Kids 12 and under are always free, but you can get in free too with these admission specials:

Bring in school supplies for children served by Hope House and receive free admission. Thursday is our Preview Night, so please note that only a portion of our grounds will be open.

Arthritis Foundation Run/Walk to Milwaukee Irish Fest – Register for the 2017 Run/Walk to Irish Fest and you’ll receive free same-day entry to the festival before 3:00 P.M.!

Sunday, August 20, 2017

Open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Fests Feed Milwaukee – Anyone donating a non-perishable food item by 11 a.m. will receive free admission to the festival. Patrons are welcome to attend the Mass beginning at 9:30 a.m. and will receive free admission immediately following. Those donating food who choose not to attend the Mass will receive a hand stamp valid for free entry at any time that day during regular festival hours (11 a.m. to 10 p.m.) or are welcome to remain in the designated section of the South Gate. Ward’s and Claddagh will open at 9 a.m. to provide breakfast. All non-perishable food items will be donated to Hunger Task Force.
Military Day – On Sunday August 20, veterans and military personnel receive free admission, plus one guest. Must provide a valid proof of service at any gate ticket window to receive your free tickets. Thank you for your service to our country.

7. The Compassion Experience

This free event features an interactive journey through the true stories of children living in developing countries like the Philippines, Kenya, Uganda and the Dominican Republic.

In over 2,000 square feet of interactive exhibit space, visitors will step inside homes, markets and schools — without getting on a plane. Each child’s story starts in poverty but ends in hope.

8. IndiaFest

August 19th. 2017


Humboldt Park

A FREE day of culture, collaboration, history, diversity and inclusion. Yes, it is an entry-free festival for you to enjoy. Experience “Mini India” – Savor your sights with colorful traditional dresess to gorgeous Indian outfits; tingle your taste buds with authentic spices and delicious curries; fill your ears with music from classical to contemporary versions; Swing and dance with unforgettable Indian beats.

9. Taste of the Islands 2017

Saturday, August 26th

Celebrate the close of the Live at Peck Pavilion series with a day long celebration with music, food and culture of The Florida Keys. National touring Jimmy Buffet Tribute Band: BUFFET will perform, plus kids activities, art vendors and more!

10. Family night in Lakeshore State Park

August 31st

4:30 – 6:00

Naturalists will be reading the book ‘The Magic Goggles’, followed by viewing with a hand lens and identifying real life invertebrates from our lake. Meet at the north entrance to the park (just south of Discovery World). Free Parking is available at the park’s south entrance road (access from Erie St.). It is about a 15 minute walk from the south entrance to the north, but on the way you can take in the lovely views of the prairies throughout the park! Paid parking is available at the north entrance at O’Donnell Park.
