Where to find maple sugaring events for kids

Can you feel it in the air? It’s maple sugarin’ season!In late February and March, the earliest signs of spring begin to show, and the maple trees are ready to be tapped.It’s also when local nature centers gear up for their annual maple sugaring events, enabling kids and families to learn about the process in a hands-on, interactive way.

It’s the perfect time to explore nature with your kids, and learn together about how we turn nature into products that we love.

Check out these events, listed in order by date, for a unique experience with your kids:

Tapping the Sugar Bush

Saturday, February 25th

1:00 – 2:30 p.m.

Riveredge Nature Center (4458 County Hwy Y, Saukville,WI 53080)

Help prepare for the sugarin’ season by tapping the maple trees in Riveredge’s sugar bush. They need your help to drill the holes, tap in the spiles and hang the buckets.

Maple Sugarin’ Festival at Riveredge Nature Center

Saturday, March 25th

10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Riveredge Nature Center (4458 County Hwy Y, Saukville,WI 53080)

Riveredge has over 40 years of experience maple sugaring, and they tap around 400 trees a year. Their Maple Sugarin’ Festival will take you on a journey through the sugarbush where you’ll learn how to tap a maple tree, observe live demonstrations, participate in hands-on activities, enjoy music, games, and more. When you reach the evaporator, you’ll see how sap is transformed into syrup and enjoy pancakes with 100% pure Riveredge maple syrup. Lunch & refreshments will be available for purchase.

This year’s festival activities include a live blacksmith branding demonstration, syrup tasting, historical legends and experiences, indoor crafts and games, make your own pancake mix, tree tapping treks, music and more!

From Sap to Syrup! Maple Sugaring (Riverside Park)

Saturday, March 4th, 18th & 25th 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

For adults and accompanied children | Adults: $10 (Nonmembers: $15) Children: $5 (Nonmembers: $7)

Take an in depth look into maple sap harvesting in Riverside Park and how maple syrup is made. This program will be both indoors and out. After learning about the process, you’ll get to enjoy pancakes with homemade maple syrup. Registration required.

Here comes the melting snow, muddy shoes and maple sugar. Bring your big boots and sweet tooth for this fun event. It will start inside with a story of how maple sugaring may have been discovered. Then you’ll travel outside through the stages of making maple syrup, from tapping trees to boiling sap with the sugar farmer at the evaporator. Explore nature with your littles ones! Hike, play, enjoy art activities, and listen to a story. Dress for the weather to explore outdoors in snow, rain, mud, and sunshine! Maple Syrup Family Days (Free!)

Saturday, March 25th

11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Richfield Nature/Historical ParkEntrance: 1896 State Road 164, Richfield, WI 53076

Did you know it takes 40 gallons of sap to make just one gallon of the delicious syrup? Learn about the maple syrup process, and see maple trees tapped, sap dripping into the bags fastened to the trees and steam hovering above the boiler while the sap bubbles.

Enjoy free admission, demonstrations, story time in the log cabin, tours of the Mill & Mill House (small fee), a wagon ride to historic building, hot food for sale and maple cotton candy!

Maple Sugar Days at Wehr Nature Center

Saturday & Sunday, March 25 & 26, 2017

1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Celebrate the spring thaw and our Wisconsin heritage. The program includes a short walk to the sugarbush, a visit to an old-time sugarin’ camp, a boil down demonstration and hands-on activities for children. A pancake with real maple syrup will top off the day. The guided hikes begin at 1:00 p.m. and continue every 15 minutes until 4 pm. Maple sugar treats and tapping equipment will be available for purchase. $6 per person, payable at the door. Children ages 2 & under – FREE

$3 Regular parking fee in effect. FREE parking for Friends of Wehr Members.

Pancake Breakfast at Riveredge Nature Center

Sunday, April 2nd

9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Riveredge Nature Center (4458 County Hwy Y, Saukville,WI 53080)

Enjoy all-you-can-eat pancakes made with organic flour, Riveredge’s 100% pure maple syrup, ham, coffee, and other beverages. There will be a live band. The event is held outdoors at the evaporator in Riveredge’s Sugarbush.
