7 ways to use essential oils with kids (sponsored content)

You've probably heard already that essential oils can offer amazing benefits for your family's health.

These natural, plant based oils support your body’s immune system and help maintain health and wellness. They can be used in your personal care products, in homemade cleaners and as natural remedies.

I was excited to be contacted by Amy Coats, an essential oils specialist. She helped educate me about how you can use essential oils safely with kids.

Read on for seven unique ways to use essential oils with your kids:

1. Calm and Improve Focus

Use lavender to calm the mind, soothe occasional skin irritations, and help ease feelings of tension. Or help ground emotions and support the immune system with vetiver.

2. Encourage Reading and Learning

Cedarwood evokes feelings of wellness and vitality with its grounding aroma. An Encouraging Blend offered by Amy promotes feelings of confidence, courage and belief, and counteracts negative emotions of doubt, pessimism and cynicism.

3. Help cure a tummyache

Soothe the occasional stomachache with a Digestive Blend that helps reduce bloating, gas and occasional indigestion.

4. Relieve cold & respiratory symptoms

Apply a Respiratory Blend topically to the chest, breathe deeply, and enjoy a cooling, invigorating vapor that promotes a restful night’s sleep and helps to minimize the effects of seasonal threats.

5. Promote Sleep

Diffuse a Calming Blend into a subtle aroma to promote relaxation and a restful sleeping environment, lessen feelings of tension and calm emotions.

6. Make Calming Playdough

Ingredients:

2 Cups Flour

1 Cup Salt

2 tsp Cream of Tarter

Food Coloring

Instructions: Mix all ingredients except essential oils and food coloring in a medium saucepan, stirring for 5 minutes over medium heat or until the dough reaches the right consistency. Split into 3 portions and knead in essential oils and food coloring.

Frequently asked questions:

1. What are essential oils?

Essential Oils are naturally occurring aromatic compounds of plants. They are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of plants. Essential oils protect plants against environmental threats and provide beneficial properties. They are highly concentrated when distilled for purity, potency, and efficacy. Essential oils have been used since the beginning of time for food preparation, beauty treatment and healthcare practices.

2. How do you use essential oils?

There are three ways to use essential oils.

Aromatically. Diffuse a few drops in the morning, throughout the day, or while you’re sleeping. Place a drop in your palm, rub your hands together and inhale. Add to household surface cleaners or to a load of laundry. Make a linen spray and apply to pillow or bed linens.

Topically. Apply 1-2 drops of essential oil directly on the desired location. Dilute 1-2 drops in fractionated coconut oil and massage on the neck, feet, chest or back.

Internally. Put desired number of essential oils drops in an empty capsule and swallow with water. Add 1-2 drops of essential oil to a glass of water.

3. Why are essential oils effective?

Essential oils work on the cellular level and protect the cells. They are nutrients that penetrate the cell membrane and have a unique chemical structure that allows the oils to pass directly through the skin for immediate systemic response to topical application.
