5 little-known local museums to visit this winter


If you're looking to get out of the house (and out of the rain), check out these five lesser-known area museums. The visits will make for a fun adventure with your kids!

1. Chudnow Museum of Yesteryear

The Chudnow Museum of Yesteryear is a history museum that displays the late Avrum Chudnow’s (1913-2005) extensive and eclectic collection of early 20th Century Americana. Explore Milwaukee area shops and exhibits from the 1920's and 1930's era.

2. Mitchell Gallery of Flight

5300 S. Howell Ave. Milwaukee, WI 53207 414-747-4503

Do you have an airplane-lover at home? This non-profit aviation museum is located inside Milwaukee's General Mitchell International Airport. Check out aviation artifacts, memorabilia & photographs.

3. North Point Lighthouse

2650 N Wahl Ave.

Climb the tower for an unbeatable view of Lake Michigan, Milwaukee & Lake Park. Explore artwork, artifacts, documents and education materials of Milwaukee’s famous lighthouse and its keepers.

4. Spinning Top & Yo-Yo Museum

533 Milwaukee Ave.

It's a bit of a drive, but you'll find 40+ hands-on spinning tops & hands-on action top games, over 2,000 tops & yo-yos & gyroscopes, top spinning videos, an I Spy Hunt, and a live presentation by The Top Lady, Judith Schulz. This museum is more of a guided personal tour with hands-on tops!

There is also a Logic Puzzle Museum inside. Play & think with more than 60 different hands-on brain twisters, mechanical & 3-D logic puzzles. Make a set of 2 puzzles to keep, included in your visit!

According to their website, the museum is best suited for ages 5-105, though not younger.

*Important!* The museum is currently undergoing a remodel. However, you can visit their historic gift shop, pictured below, to see hundreds of tops and logic puzzles, free live demonstrations and meet the top collector!

5. Wisconsin Automotive Museum

147 N. Rural St.

Hartford, WI 53027

Explore Wisconsin's largest auto museum with 105 classic, vintage autos and automotive artifacts on display including a 250 ton steam locomotive from 1913.
