Review: The Original Pancake House on Downer

It was 6:45 a.m. on this beautiful Sunday morning. And thanks to Daylight Savings Time, everyone in the house was up.

The last time we ate in a restaurant with our kids, my husband vowed we would not do it again until our youngest was at least three years old.

She's still one and a half.

But somehow we found ourselves venturing out to an old favorite, The Original Pancake House on Downer Ave. in Milwaukee.

It opens at 7:00 a.m., and if you get there early enough, there won't be a wait.

We arrived at around 7:45, and the place was about half filled with families and older folk enjoying their morning coffee.

The friendly hostess seated us right away and brought over a highchair and booster seat. The kids got crayons and a nice big coloring and game page to entertain them.

The server got to us right away and brought drinks quickly, which is an essential element to any restaurant we bring our kids to.

Our kids split a short stack of pancakes and a side of eggs, but you can opt for sausage or bacon instead, and that combination runs between $5.00 and $6.00.

I ordered a vegetable omelette that is larger than my head and comes with a fantastic aged cheddar. All omelettes come with a side of three medium-sized pancakes for a nice treat with your savory meal.

The menu allows you to be much more adventurous with your choice of omelette, pancakes, waffles or french toast; I just like to stick to the basics.

The total was $40.00 even, and there were plenty of leftovers to take home. We were in and out in approximately one hour. We'll definitely be back for another round at our favorite pancake place in town.

Pros:

-Always other families there

-Kid's menu and crayons

-Quick, friendly service

-Fluffy, tasty pancakes and huge omelettes

Cons:

-The coffee was just luke-warm this morning, but we've never had that problem before.

-Parking can be an issue in this area, but we usually don't have a problem parking in the public lot across from Sendik's.
