We had a blast this Saturday at the bright purple restaurant on Kinnickinic Avenue in Bay View. Hamburger Mary's caters to families with a special kids' menu, children's specials, and kitschy decorations. And while I love the risqué tone, it's not for the faint of heart.
We went for an early dinner around 5:00, and were greeted by a larger-than-life, cartoonish, and scantily clad Hamburger Mary statue. The hostess, a six foot tall drag queen that was much prettier than I, sat us in a corner booth and provided us with "Little Lambs" kids' menus and crayons.
The kids' menu offered grilled cheese, a mini hamburger, and other traditional favorites. I ordered an adult grilled cheese with basil and tomato, and my husband was impressed with the Sloppy Mary burger and perfectly crisp "ta-tas" (tater tots). They also serve local favorites like Sprecher root beer.
When my little guy started to get antsy, we walked around and marveled at the one-of-a-kind decorations plastered all over the tables and walls. He especially loved the old-fashioned tin lunch boxes hanging from the ceiling, the vintage bicycle hanging on a post, and the gigantic stoplight in the outdoor seating area. The check even arrives inside of a jeweled high-heel shoe.
After dinner, my husband and I actually enjoyed an uninterrupted conversation with each other while my son watched the cartoon that was playing on the television above him.
Next time we'll be sure to try the s'mores for dessert, because I hear you roast them right at the table!
Hamburger Mary's definitely welcomes families and makes for a fun and unique experience. It's also a hotspot for late-night drag queen shows and Zombie pub crawls, so it probably isn't for every family. But we will definitely be back, probably on a Monday night when kids eat free and children's movies are shown.
