THE IRON GIANT (1999)
ANIMATION | PG | ATMOSPHERIC THEATER FAMILY FILM CAMP

It came from outer space. Cold War paranoia comes to a fever pitch in a small Maine fishing town in director Brad Bird’s (THE INCREDIBLES) beautifully crafted and beloved animated adventure about friendship, choosing your own destiny, and testing your mettle.

In October of 1957, America had plenty to be worried about. Rock ‘n’ roll. Television. The bomb. Sputnik. The Cold War. In the small town of Rockwell, Maine, Annie Hughes (Jennifer Aniston) is just worried about putting supper on the table for herself and her headstrong and imaginative nine-year-old son, Hogarth. Inspired by a fisherman’s wild tale, Hogarth sets off into the woods and finds a 50-foot giant with an insatiable appetite for metal and a childlike curiosity about its new world. As the Iron Giant (Vin Diesel) is discovered by government agents, friendly beatniks, and the military, he’ll have to decide whether he wants to be a gun, or a hero. In times like these, you really find out what your friends are made of… and sometimes, it’s metal.

Underappreciated in its time, THE IRON GIANT is now widely considered one of the quintessential animated classics of the late ‘90s, and for good reason. The gorgeous animation, engaging story, and timeless themes are as excellent today as they were in 1999. Paired with an outstanding voice cast that also included Christopher McDonald and Harry Connick Jr. and you’ve got an all-time great that your whole family will love.
