Caring for Kids in Foster Care

  • 08/05/2023
  • 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
  • Waukesha Public Library: 321 Wisconsin Avenue Waukesha, WI

We’re taking it back to where it all began 10 years ago with this project for Kids Matter Inc. lending a little hand to local kids in foster care! SBK’s very first project was with this organization and we’re excited to revisit it in the days leading up to our 10th birthday party. Kids Matter Inc. is dedicated to supporting foster and kinship children as well as helping abused and neglected children heal and thrive.

Bring your creativity and love of reading to help kids in foster care while also helping say Thank You to the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for all they do. Many kids in foster and kinship care have parents who are in drug treatment or who for other reasons have very limited opportunities to be with their children while they are being cared for by others. Wherever possible, we want the families to have opportunities to bond as they pursue reunification. A great way to do this is to use technology like FaceTime or Skype (or even just over the phone) to read together with their children.

Please join us from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturday, August 5 to collect books for families to read together during their virtual/phone visits, decorate gift bags to hold the books, and color special thank you cards for the CASAs.

What to expect:

We’ll start with a brief explanation of Kids Matter Inc. and how we’re supporting their work, then we’ll get to work making cards for the CASAs and decorating bags for books to be provided to foster children. All art supplies will be provided.

Capacity & age recommendations:

All ages are welcome. We expect to have capacity for approximately 10 families.

What to bring:

Bring your creativity, and, if you are able, please bring TWO copies of an age-appropriate book for small children (ages 1-10). One copy is given to the foster child and the other to the parent to read together virtually or over the phone. All other card-making and bag decorating supplies will be provided.

This project is currently open to members* but we will be happy to open it up to guests of space allows.  Please only sign up if you know you can attend. We understand illness and emergencies do come up so if you register and can no longer attend, please let us know ASAP so we can fill your spot.

Please note: Dates and times are subject to change, and occasionally events may be cancelled. Please check the event website to confirm the latest details: (Hey! It’s Card-Making Time MKE!)
